GTA VI GUIDES · PARENTS & FAMILY SETTINGS · UPDATED OCTOBER 29, 2026

The game rating is only half the decision. Here is how to configure real console restrictions before the November 19 launch.

Quick answer: Yes, parents can restrict access to mature-rated games such as GTA VI using PlayStation family controls or Microsoft Family Safety on Xbox. Use a separate child account, set the age/content limit, and protect purchases and guest access. These settings do not make GTA VI a child-friendly game; they help adults control access. Rockstar lists a November 19, 2026 launch for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

1. What is GTA VI rated, and why does that matter?

Rockstar’s official GTA VI page links to an ESRB listing with a Mature 17+ rating and content descriptors that include blood and gore, intense violence, mature humor, nudity, strong language, strong sexual content, and use of drugs and alcohol. It also flags in-game purchases. This is a content-rating statement, not a promise that every feature or online interaction is suitable for a teenager. Read our GTA VI age-rating explainer for the descriptors in context.

GTA VI is not released yet as of this update. Parents should not rely on screenshots of supposed in-game settings, claimed child-safe modes, or unverified online-access controls. Instead, configure the console account first, where PlayStation and Microsoft already document their tools.

2. PS5: Set a child account and age restriction before launch

  1. Create or check the child’s account. Sign in as the family manager, then go to Settings → Family and Parental Controls → Family Management. Sony also supports adding a child via the PlayStation Family app or online Account Management.
  2. Choose age-appropriate game restrictions. Select the child and review the allowed game age level. A restriction below GTA VI’s applicable rating should prevent access on that child profile, subject to Sony’s exception settings.
  3. Review communication, playtime and spending. Sony documents controls for communication, user-generated content, playtime and monthly spending limits. Set these independently; blocking purchases is not the same as blocking a game.
  4. Close bypass routes. Sony recommends disabling guest login/new user creation where appropriate, adding a login passcode to adult profiles, and setting a system restriction passcode.
  5. Test with the child’s profile. Confirm that restrictions are enforced from the child account rather than only visible in the family-manager dashboard.

For the latest menu labels and account-specific options, follow Sony’s official parent-safety guide and family-account setup instructions.

3. Xbox Series X|S: Filter mature games and require purchase approval

  1. Add the child to a Microsoft family group. Use Microsoft Family Safety or the Xbox family settings with an organizer account. Keep the child’s own sign-in separate from an adult profile.
  2. Set the age limit for apps and games. Microsoft says its app/game content filters apply on Xbox and Windows devices. Choose a limit appropriate to the child; do not assume a store listing or adult-owned download automatically bypasses the filter.
  3. Turn on Ask a parent for purchases. On Xbox, an organizer can open Settings → Account → Family settings → Manage family members, select the child, and find purchase approval under the privacy / buy-and-download controls.
  4. Check permissions and adult account security. Review who can sign in, make purchases, or alter family settings. Test restrictions while signed in as the child.

Use Microsoft’s game-content filtering instructions and official Xbox purchase-approval steps rather than unofficial settings screenshots.

5. What about shared games, preorders and in-game spending?

Shared console does not mean shared permissions. A game purchased on an adult account may be available to other profiles depending on the platform’s sharing settings, but parental restrictions should still be evaluated on the child’s own account. Do not use an adult profile as a workaround.

Preorder bonuses do not override family rules. Rockstar has announced preorder incentives and a November 12 preload date for digital preorders; those announcements do not establish a GTA VI-specific parental-control system. Our preorder-bonus guide explains the officially announced offers without assuming how future in-game menus will work.

In-game purchases require separate attention. The ESRB listing flags in-game purchases, but that label alone does not describe every future purchase flow. Configure platform spending controls now, then review any additional GTA VI options after Rockstar documents them.

Frequently asked questions

Can a child play GTA VI on a PS5 if a parent buys it?

Buying a game on an adult account does not change its content rating. A child account’s parental controls and any explicitly granted exceptions determine access; consult Sony’s current rules.

Does GTA VI have a confirmed kid-safe mode?

No such mode is documented in the official Rockstar materials reviewed for this guide. Treat online claims of one as unverified until Rockstar publishes details.

Will Xbox Family Safety block GTA VI automatically?

Microsoft’s content filters use the age limit you set for the child. Review and test the configuration; do not assume it was enabled by default.

Can parental controls stop purchases?

Yes, both platforms provide purchasing restrictions or approvals, but those controls are separate from game-age access and should be configured independently.
