READY FOR NOVEMBER 19 · BUYER SUPPORT
Quick answer: To cancel a Grand Theft Auto VI preorder, go to the store that took your payment, not automatically to Rockstar. A PlayStation Store preorder follows PlayStation’s refund rules; an Xbox/Microsoft Store preorder is managed in Microsoft order history; a Rockstar Store boxed-code preorder goes through Xsolla; and another retailer handles its own order. Do this before the November 12 preload if you are considering a PlayStation refund, because starting the main game download can affect eligibility.
Rockstar confirms GTA VI is scheduled for November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with digital preloading beginning November 12. This is a store-by-store cancellation guide, not a promise that every preorder will be refundable. Policies depend on region, payment status, download activity and applicable consumer law. Rockstar’s GTA VI purchase-support FAQ identifies who handles each purchase.
First, find out who actually sold you GTA VI
Check the confirmation email or bank statement. The game publisher, payment processor and retailer are not always the same company. Your order number and receipt are more useful than a screenshot of the GTA VI product page.
Digital preorder
PlayStation Store: check PlayStation transaction history and refund eligibility.
Xbox / Microsoft Store: find the preorder in Microsoft order history; cancel there if the option is available.
Boxed download-code preorder
Rockstar Store: use the Xsolla cancellation route linked by Rockstar.
Other retailer: contact that retailer; Rockstar does not cancel its orders.
If you bought a physical version, read our GTA VI code-in-box guide before assuming a sealed box works like a traditional disc release.
How to cancel a GTA VI preorder on PS5
For a PlayStation Store digital purchase, start with PlayStation Store & Refunds, sign in, open transaction history and select the GTA VI purchase if it is eligible for a refund. PlayStation’s published refund guidance distinguishes preorders made more than 14 days before release from those made closer to launch. In either case, preloading the main game matters.
- Open the PlayStation account that made the purchase; find the transaction and order date.
- Check your country’s PlayStation Store cancellation policy before pressing any download or preload button.
- If the main game has not downloaded, use the refund request option or contact PlayStation Support.
- Save the request confirmation. Do not assume deleting the game, removing the preorder from your wishlist, or canceling GTA+ cancels the game purchase.
PlayStation’s official refund checklist says that for preorders placed more than 14 days before release, requests generally need to be made before release and before the main product has downloaded or preloaded. For orders made less than 14 days before release, its checklist uses a 14-day-from-purchase condition, also subject to no main download. Rules and remedies may differ by territory and for faulty content.
Why November 12 matters: Rockstar’s official preload date is November 12, seven days before launch. PlayStation warns that automatic downloads can begin if enabled. If you are undecided about keeping the preorder, check auto-download settings and refund eligibility before that date. See the GTA VI preload guide for the official timeline.
How to cancel a GTA VI preorder on Xbox
Microsoft’s official preorder support page says to sign in to Microsoft account order history, locate the preorder and choose Cancel if offered. Its separate cancellation instructions explain that if the Cancel option is missing, an Xbox purchase may already have been billed and you may need to use the Xbox refund request route instead.
- Sign in to the Microsoft account used for the Xbox preorder.
- Open Microsoft order history and find Grand Theft Auto VI.
- Choose Cancel item if available, and retain the confirmation email.
- If it is not available, follow Microsoft’s official refund process; do not assume a refund is automatic.
When will Xbox charge you? Microsoft says digital preorders paid from Microsoft-account balance are charged immediately. With other payment methods, it may charge up to ten days before release. That is a general Microsoft Store rule, not a GTA VI-specific guaranteed billing date. Check your order history for the actual status. Microsoft also says cancellations after billing but before release are processed as refunds, subject to the applicable process.
Rockstar Store boxed copy vs another retailer
Rockstar’s GTA VI physical-preorder cancellation article is unusually clear: the retailer handles cancellation. If you purchased a GTA VI boxed-code copy through Rockstar Store, Rockstar directs you to Xsolla’s preorder cancellation instructions. If you ordered from a different retailer, use that retailer’s customer-service channel and return terms instead.
Rockstar expects the physical code-in-box edition to become available beginning November 12 for preloading. That does not mean every retailer will ship on exactly the same day, nor does it guarantee a cancellation after dispatch. Before redeeming a boxed code, inspect the retailer’s sealed-code return policy. For an imported gift, also see our PS5 code-region guide.
Five-minute checklist before requesting a refund
- Find the order: save the retailer, platform, account, order number, purchase date and payment method.
- Check status: pending, charged, shipped, delivered or redeemed can lead to different options.
- Check download state: for PlayStation especially, determine whether the main game has started downloading or preloading.
- Check bonus consequences: canceling a preorder may remove early-access bonus entitlements. Rockstar’s preorder-bonus guide explains the Vintage Vice City Pack and digital GTA+ offer; do not assume bonuses survive a canceled purchase.
- Keep proof: retain the refund request and response, and follow up with the seller rather than opening duplicate requests across unrelated support teams.
If you are canceling because you picked the wrong edition, first compare our Standard vs Ultimate Edition guide. Confirm whether an upgrade is available for your platform and region before buying a second copy.
Frequently asked questions
Can I cancel GTA VI on PS5 after preloading?
PlayStation’s published preorder checklist generally requires that the main content has not downloaded or preloaded, except where a faulty-product remedy or applicable law provides otherwise. Check the policy for your account region and ask PlayStation Support.
Why is there no Cancel button for my Xbox preorder?
Microsoft says the order may already have been billed or shipped. Use its Xbox refund route or support guidance instead of assuming the preorder is impossible to refund.
Does Rockstar refund my PlayStation or Xbox digital preorder?
Rockstar directs PlayStation and Xbox purchases to the corresponding platform support team. Contact the storefront that processed the transaction.
What if I bought a GTA VI boxed download code?
Rockstar says physical cancellations belong to the retailer. For Rockstar Store purchases, use Xsolla; for other retailers, contact the original seller and check code-redemption rules.
Will I lose my preorder bonuses if I cancel?
Do not assume bonuses remain. PlayStation warns that early-access extra content can stop working after an eligible preorder cancellation. Review the specific store’s terms before canceling or repurchasing.
